Sunny 104.5 finds plugs from strange places
Why is Infinity broadcasting's KYW 1060-AM playing commercials for rival company Clear Channel's WSNI 104.5-FM?

Why is Infinity broadcasting's KYW 1060-AM playing commercials for rival company Clear Channel's WSNI 104.5-FM? According to Philadelphia Clear Channel regional vice president and market manager, Rich Lewis, the all-news station, which placed fourth in the spring Arbitron ratings for ages 12 and above, doesn't feel it will lose listeners since they share the target demographic of ages 40 and up.

WSNI switched from hot adult contemporary to a new format that Lewis didn't even know what to call. It plays top 40 hits from the '60s, '70s and some '80s. It could be called the "Time-Life" station, as it sounds like one of those compilation albums advertised on television with songs played such as "Cats in the Cradle," "Afternoon Delight" and "Both Sides Now."

Clear Channel, which owns WDAS-FM, WDAS-AM, WUSL-FM, WIOQ-FM and WJJZ-FM, is also cross-promoting on Contemporary Hit Radio/Pop Q-102, with ads that say something to the effect "tell your parents about the new radio station in town." In the spring Arbitrons, 104.5, known as Alice (WLCE) 104.5 until last week, placed a dismal 17th out of 30 stations with a 2.1 rating. That means 2.1 percent of the four million listeners in the Delaware Valley at any given time were tuned into 104.5.

WSNI joins Oldies WOGL-FM, '80s station WPTP-FM, Classic Rock WMGK-FM, and Adult Standards WPEN-AM in the living in the past club.

GOOD DAYS AHEAD?

WTXF hopes to have a replacement for "Good Day Philadelphia" by Sept. 19 when co-host Mike Jerrick leaves the show for the Fox News Channel. Jerrick signed a three-year deal with the FNC and will be part of the weekend edition of "Fox and Friends." According to WTXF vice president and general manager, Roger Lamay, there are no in-house candidates for the position to join Kerri Lee Halkett. Personable weather anchor Sue Serio becomes the co-host with the most seniority on the show. She began in 1997. Do you remember the original hosts? E-mail me your answer, and I'll announce the first person with the correct answer next week.

NO WHO, WHAT, WHERE, AND WHEN - JUST THE WHO

WCAU news anchor Larry Mendte and his wife Dawn Stensland, news anchor on WTXF, rocked out at the Who concert last week. Mendte, formerly of the entertainment show "Access Hollyawood," said they frequently go to concerts - Paul McCartney was a recent favorite. Larry and Dawn are going to see Bruce Springsteen in Washington, D.C., this week ... The Mid-Atlantic Emmy award nominations for the best in local television are Tuesday. The 20th annual Emmy ceremonies are Sept. 14 ... The chance to win a walk-on role on a network show happens at The WB "Clean & Clear Casting Call 2002" at the King of Prussia Plaza on Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. Aspiring stars between the ages of 12 and 24 will be asked to act out a scene from "Reba" or "Gilmore Girls" for the chance to go Hollywood. Scripts and entry forms are available at www.wb17.com...

There are many strange happenings in "Signs." I'll buy the crop circles and aliens, but KYW's Ukee Washington is heard anchoring the news. We're supposed to believe that somebody is watching Channel 3?
