Weekend anchor working overtime at Channel 3

CBS3 weekend sports anchor Steve Bucci is a key player for the expanded Eagles' coverage on the station this year.

"I'm pooped, and the season has just begun," joked Bucci, who was part of three station specials the weekend before the season opener.

Besides his regular role as the weekend sports anchor and weekday sports reporter, Bucci's 12-hour plus Eagles' game days start with the "Eagles Kickoff" show at 11:30 a.m. Sundays and the Eagles' pre-game show on CBS3 sister station WYSP 94.1-FM. Bucci's game day ends with "Eagles Total Access" at 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

"It will be interesting to see how that turns out as the radio and the television shows are on at the same time," he said.

Bucci, an Allentown native and Shippensburg University graduate, is entering his seventh year with CBS3 (practically a lifetime for Channel 3). After stints in Johnson City, Tenn., ("I hated every minute of it."), Richmond, Va., (where he worked the same time as CSN's Ron Burke), and Washington, D.C. ("Not nearly as good a sports town as Philly."), Bucci loves being a couple of hours from his hometown, while enjoying life as a bachelor in Center City.

"Ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to be a sportscaster," Bucci said. "In ninth grade I wrote a letter to [Phillies announcer] Harry Kalas asking for advice about the business. He was classy enough to write me back. When I began here, I told him about the letter. He said, 'Looks like you are doing OK for yourself.' "

Kalas' voice can be heard on Bucci's voice mail message at Channel 3 ("Steve Bucci is outta here!").

Ratings game

The Eagles-Bucs game scored a 15.1 rating/23 share for ABC. Of course, in Philly it ballooned to a 33.0 rating/46 share for 6ABC. 6ABC's pre-game special had an 18.5 rating/26 share. Lots of people stuck around until 12:45 a.m. to watch "Football Frenzy," which had an 8.1 rating/23 share.

Each national rating point is equal to around a million households. Each local rating point is equal at 28.305 households.

"The Monday Night Kickoff" with Tom Cardella (who unfortunately was let go by WYSP 94.1 FM) and Dave Spadaro will air Mondays at 8 p.m. on WBCB 1490-AM.

Fishin' for listeners

WBCB also has hooked "The Ardent Angler Show" with Chris Gatley and Ray Goeke during the prime fishing hour of 7 a.m. on Saturday. Worms aren't included.
