Comcast SportsNet grabbed 36 Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award nominations,
including "Outstanding Sports Newscast" for "SportsNITE,"
"Outstanding Talk Show" for "Daily News Live, " and
"Outstanding Talk Show" for "Spotlight."
The network was also recognized in the "Outstanding Sports
Series" category with its "Sixers Jam" and in the
promotional announcements and campaign categories.
The network's game coverage for the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia
76ers and college basketball were also nominated for live sports
coverage.
Personalities who received nominations were Michael Barkann, Leslie
Gudel, Neil Hartman, Ron Burke, Matt Yallof, Dei Lynam, Sean Murphy, and
Fred Bibbo (the security guard-turned reporter).
Also, the Eagles Television Network received 16 nominations. The
Phillies received two nods, and the Sixers one nomination.
None of the major four broadcast anchors - Beasley Reece of CBS3, Gary
Papa of WPVI, Vai Sikahema of WCAU, or Don Tollefson of WTXF were
nominated for "Outstanding Sports Anchor."
The Emmys will be handed out September 13.
Jaws 3-D
Ron Jaworski did a great job hanging with the big boys,
Chris Berman and Tom Jackson during halftime of the Eagles/Saints game
on ESPN Monday night. According to ESPN spokesperson Dave Nagle,
the former Eagle quarterback was part of the studio segments that night
because it was a Monday and the pre-game show was "Monday Night
Countdown (with Chris Berman subbing for host Stuart Scott). When
the regular season begins, new ESPN hire Michael Irvin will be the third
analyst with Boomer and T.J. Jaws' success at ESPN should be no
surprise to Eagles fans, as the former quarterback never met a
microphone he didn't like.
In other football notes, ABC's first Monday night game between Green Bay
and Kansas City hit the top 20 in the weekly television ratings.
The Eagles/Saints game, which was broadcast locally on Channel 6 had an
impressive 15.2 rating/22 share.
The Eagles' game vs. Pittsburgh is tomorrow on Channel 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Beasley Reece will get to see former Eagle Hugh Douglas up close and
personal, as Reece will be doing the Jacksonville/Carolina game for CBS
week one. Meanwhile, could Reece who is doing a ton of Eagles
stuff for Channel 3, be spreading himself too thin? For the first
"Coach's Show" on WYSP 94.1-FM, Steve Bucci filled in for
Reece, who is supposed to be the host the radio show with Merrill Reese
this season.
After the Eagles battle Tampa Bay in the season opener on Monday,
September 8, the Birds will be the featured game on CBS September 14
when they host New England. The CBS number one team of Greg Gumbel
and Phil Simms will do the game, which starts at 4:15 p.m.
We're hearing that Comcast SportsNet probably won't replace Dave Brown
on "Eagles Post Game Live," and will go with the core-four of
Michael Barkann, Ray Didinger, Vaughn Hebron, and Gov. Ed Rendell.
Some may complain Comcast SportsNet is as exciting as watching grass
grow. On Monday that will be the truth as on "Phillies
Clubhouse," Sean Murphy reports on Tuckahoe Farms, where the
Phillies are growing the grass for their new home, Citizen's Bank Park.
The St. Louis/Phillies game will be on ESPN Sunday at 8 p.m.
In an eerie coincidence, HBO aired a previously scheduled special about
the U.S. Olympic Hockey team, the same day that head coach Herb Brooks
was killed in a car accident.
Former Phillie Tug McGraw is prominently featured in "Driven: Tim
McGraw," which is airing on VH1. The story of Tug's son's
rise to the top of the entertainment field is made more interesting for
local viewers with Tug's paternity angle.
NBC has announced that Jim Lampley will host the daytime NBC 2004
Olympics coverage from Athens. Pat O'Brien will host the morning
coverage on sister station Bravo. Maybe we'll forgive him for the
J-Lo/Ben Affleck interview by then.
