Here are a few of the major sports nominations for the Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards, which will be handed out September 13.

Outstanding Individual Achievement - Anchor/Sports
Leslie Gudel, Comcast SportsNet
Ron Burke, Comcast SportsNet
Matt Yallof, Comcast SportsNet

My choice would be Vai Sikahema, who makes the most of the short time he is allotted on WCAU, but since he wasn't nominated, an Emmy could make a nice wedding present for Gudel who is getting married in September. The other nominees aren't even my favorites on CSN, let alone the entire market.

Outstanding Individual Achievement - Reporter/Sports
John Clark, WCAU
Matt Yallof, Comcast SportsNet
Neil Hartman, Comcast SportsNet
John Apicello, WHTM-TV

Clark gets my vote due to his hustle getting interviews with Hugh Douglas when he signed with Jacksonville and last week's first interview with hold-out Duce Staley.

Outstanding Individual Achievement - Sports Play-By-Play or Color
Marc Zumoff, Comcast SportsNet
Mick Moninghoff, CN8, The Comcast Network
Bob Capasso, Blue Ridge Communications
Jim Jackson, Comcast SportsNet

I'd give it to Zumoff, who seems to truly appreciate every minute of his dream job.

Outstanding Individual Achievement - Host/Talk Program
Laura Jones, CN8, The Comcast Network
Larry Mendte, NBC10
Raymond Brown, New Jersey Network
Michael Barkann, Comcast SportsNet

Good job to Barkann, who crashed the category with "Daily News Live."  I think he'll take it from the newsies.

Outstanding Sports Series

"2002 Inside the Eagles" - Eagles Television Network
"Center Court with Rene Portland" - Penn State Public Television
"Sixers Jam" - Comcast SportsNet
"Philadelphia Eagles:  Unfinished Business" - NBC10
"Sports Connection" - CN8, The Comcast Network

I enjoyed "Philadelphia Eagles: Unfinished Business," which captured the craziness of the Eagles' playoff run.

Outstanding Sports Newscast

"Sportsnite" - Comcast SportsNet
"Sports Connection" - CN8, The Comcast Network

With sports programming on the broadcast stations down to a bare minimum, it is a relief to have "Sportsnite," to give a half hour of Philadelphia sports news each night.  Since CN8's expansion to New England, "Sports Connection," has become a watered down version of ESPN's "Sportscenter."

Outstanding Talk Program/Series

"Spotlight" - Comcast SportsNet
"The Tribune" - CBS3
"Daily News Live" - Comcast SportsNet
"Money Matters Today" - CN8, The Comcast Network

Congratulations to the two sports shows, which crashed the category.  I like "Daily News Live," which fills 90-minutes a day with the big sports news of the day, and the sportswriters are even dressing better.

Outstanding Sports Program/One-Time Only Special

"Field of Memories - the Story of Phillies Baseball at the Vet"- Philadelphia Phillies/Comcast
"Shooting Gallery Baseball" FOX29
"Road To Redemption" - Comcast SportsNet
"Lord of the Rinks",  Comcast SportsNet
"Kelly Mazzante-Hometown Hero" Penn State Public Television
"Connecting Generations - The 2002 Phillies Video" - Philadelphia Phillies/Comcast

"Field of Memories" was a grand slam.  Phil and Phillis would be proud!
