Rodgers off the air at CSN

Comcast SportsNet is not renewing anchor and reporter Mike Rodgers' contract, which expires at the end of the month.

Rodgers, 29, joined the network two years ago and hosted the weekend edition of "SportsRise." Expect a replacement to be named within the next few weeks.

If Rodgers wants to stay in Philly, there are two sports vacancies. WCAU has an opening because Heather Mitts, who was hired to be a sports reporter last year, is moving to Miami with her boyfriend, Dolphins quarterback A.J. Feeley. Also WPHL still has a sports opening since Geraud Moncure left the station a few months ago.

The nominees are ...

Big dreamer

For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia region has a representative in the finals of ESPN's "Dream Job."

Brian Startare (pronounced STAR-tahr-ee) of Glassboro, N.J., will be one of the 10 finalists vying for a spot on "SportsCenter" beginning Sept. 14 on ESPN.

"This is like a rebirth for me. I am lucky that I have a good job, but I'd give it up in a second for this," said Startare, 33, a manager for a healthcare organization.

A communications graduate of Rowan University, Startare was on the school radio station and has worked for a couple of radio stations in the area.

He watched "Dream Job" a few times last season, but said, "I got too bitter knowing I could do that."

Filling in

Pat Summerall will continue filling in for Mike Patrick on ESPN's "Sunday Night Football" through the month of September while Patrick recovers from triple bypass surgery.

Bonnie Bernstein will replace Lesley Visser as the sideline reporter on the top CBS football announcing team while Visser recovers from hip replacement surgery.

Family matters

Husband and wife team Larry Mendte and Dawn Stensland will do competing Eagles' pregame shows this season. Mendte will work for KYW and Stensland for WTXF.

Clarifications

Here are some clarifications from last week's column about local sportscasters:

WPVI's Jack Brayboy has been married for 11 years and has a 10-year-old son; CSN's Neil Hartman is married and has two children; and WTXF's Don Tollefson attended but did not graduate from Stanford University.

Broadcast Camp

Many local personalities were counselors at the second annual "Scholastic Play by Play Network Sports Broadcasting Camp" at Bryn Mawr College last week. Campers learned the tricks of the trade from "Uncles" Sal Palantonio of ESPN, Glen Macnow of WIP 610-AM, Steve Bucci of KYW, Marc Zumoff of the Sixers, Jim Jackson of the Flyers, and more.
