Salutes to Spector – Let it Be

Oldies WOGL 98.1-FM and WPEN’s Jerry Blavat both recently featured the music of record producer Phil Spector, after he was charged with the murder of a woman in his California home.  WOGL program director Dennis Winslow explained the reason Spector was the subject of WOGL’s hour-long “Artist Spotlight” last week was, “People were wondering what songs Spector was behind and we weren’t celebrating him.”  Blavat, who devoted his entire two-hour Sunday afternoon show to Spector said “It was a musical salute and I’m not judging the man.”  Spector produced records for The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Righteous Brothers, The Ronnettes, and others. Veteran Philadelphia radio professional Tom Richards said, “Blavat’s decision to air this special at this time is in the poorest of taste.”

With February sweeps halfway over, expect the big winner to be WTXF thanks to a couple of guys named Simon and Joe.  Due to the outstanding ratings of “American Idol” and “Joe Millionaire” the numbers for the “Ten O’clock News” have been terrific according to WTXF spokesman Chris Wolf.  Plus, according to another industry insider, there is an outside chance that the ratings for the “Ten O’clock” News may surpass the 11 p.m. numbers for KYW and its high priced free agent talent Marc Howard and Kathy Orr.

Fox News Channel weekend host Mike Jerrick competed against his former show “Good Day Philadelphia,” Monday when he filled-in on “Fox and Friends.”  WTXF has yet to name a permanent replacement for Jerrick, who left the show in the fall.  WTXF reporter Christian Farr has been the most frequent substitute.  Some of the others to sit next to Kerri Lee Halkett have been Pat Croce and Mike Missanelli.

“Wonder Woman” Lynda Carter appears on “10” today at 10 a.m. on WCAU.  Tomorrow’s entire show will be a Valentine’s Day spectacular.  Wonder if co-host Steve Levy will wear red cowboy boots for the occasion?  Also, for Valentine’s Day, “It’s Your Call with Lynn Doyle” is doing a show about relationships tonight at 9 p.m. on CN8, and Sunny 104.5-FM hopes to repeat the success of its holiday songs over the holiday season, as it continues with “Love Songs” week.

Former Philadelphia talk radio host John Ziegler, most recently a contributor to CN8’s “It’s Your Call with Lynn Doyle” has found success in his new home of Louisville, Kentucky.  Ziegler, a native of Washington Crossing and a graduate of Holy Ghost Prep won his 9 a.m. – noon timeslot for talk show station WHAS-840AM.  He also is appearing on the NBC Louisville affiliate’s 7 p.m. news for a weekly debate.

The latest traffic star is KYW’s hyper Bob Kelly, who has managed to put personality into traffic updates.  It wouldn’t be surprising to see Kelly eventually promoted to a regular reporter gig, since stations seem to be more relaxed about moving traffic reporters into other roles.  At WTXF, traffic reporter Dorothy Krysiuk handles “Consumer Reports.”  WCAU’s Amber Rupinta has been moved from the traffic desk to regular reporting duties, and of course the big success story is KYW’s Robin Rieger, who began at KYW in traffic and is now the morning weekend news anchor.

“True Colors”

Contrary to what was reported last week, WPHL’s station colors continue to be purple and black, but the new news colors are black, white, and red. Thus the web site is in the clear for its purple and black theme.
