Sports announcers are Birds of a feather

A flock of former Eagles are enjoying second careers as sports broadcasters:

Vai Sikahema, WCAU Sports Director: Sikahema, a special teams player for most of his NFL career, is now first-string as a top-notch sports anchor for WCAU. He covered the Olympics on the network level for the first time in his career this summer, and shows his versatility by doing other types of reports for WCAU. Many don't think of him as an ex-player.

Vaughn Hebron, Comcast SportsNet's "Eagles Post Game Live": The adorable Hebron has not only established himself as a clothes horse, but as a capable analyst. If he were a bigger star when he was a player, such as Dan Marino or Deion Sanders, he'd be on a national show.

Brian Baldinger, Fox Football analyst: Baldinger succeeded in broadcasting the same way he did as a player - with hard work. As an offensive lineman for the Eagles, Baldinger wasn't a marquee name, but has worked himself up from NFL Europe to a coveted spot on the network.

Ron Jaworski, ESPN: "Jaws'' lives up to his nickname as a lively contributor to ESPN. It's not a surprise that he is a successful announcer. He was always a great interview as the quarterback of the Eagles.

Garry Cobb, KYW and WIP: Cobb does both television and radio. Though he is fine in his TV gig, he seems better suited for radio where the former linebacker enjoys tackling (pun intended) sports and life issues.

Work to do

This weekend, "Inside the NFL" on HBO examines how the lifestyle of NFL head coaches is detrimental to their health (See: Vermeil, Dick).

One down, 81 to go

The Sixers season opener against Boston will air on Comcast SportsNet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Marc Zumoff and Steve Mix will return to the broadcast booth. Where have you gone Caldwell Jones?

Yea, no Siragusa

Dick Enberg, Dan Dierdort and Armen Keteyian will do the Eagles-Ravens game for CBS at 1 p.m. Sunday. Greg Gumbel will interview Terrell Owens on "The NFL Today" at noon.

Johnny come lately

Red Sox star Johnny Damon will be a guest on "The Late Show with David Letterman" at 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Cheap seats

Cross "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and "Sportscenter" and you have "Cheap Seats" on ESPN Classic at 10 p.m. Monday. Comedians Randy and Jason Sklar make fun of old sporting events such as the 1973 "Superstars." I'm holding out for the relay race between Gabe Kaplan and Robert Conrad on the 1976 "Battle of the Network Stars."
