Ratings say only Spurs profited from NBA Finals

Except for the San Antonio Spurs, this year's NBA Finals was a bust, the lowest rated in 30-years.

The series between the New Jersey Nets and the Spurs averaged around a 6.2 rating, down 40 percent from last year's finals between the Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers. Each ratings point equals around a million households.

In a carefully worded press release, ABC said the NBA playoffs "achieved substantial ratings gains over last year's programming." In other words, ABC said the games did better than summer reruns. That's a publicity department working hard.

So why did the games do so poorly? A number of factors: The six-day layoff between the end of the conference finals, low-scoring games, the Lakers weren't involved and even the ugly uniforms of both teams didn't help.

ESPN will try to rebound by airing the NBA Draft Thursday night at 7. No. 1 pick LeBron James will be a guest on tonight's edition of "On the Record with Bob Costas" on HBO at 11:30. The other guests are Arnold Schwarzenegger, who will be pitching his upcoming "Terminator" movie, and New York Yankees star Roger Clemens, who will just be pitching.

In more basketball news, Doug Collins won't be replacing former Sixers head coach Larry Brown, he'll be analyzing him. Collins was named the men's basketball analyst for the 2004 Summer Olympics from Athens, Greece. Brown is the head coach of the team.

Vai gets message across

WCAU weekday sports anchor Vai Sikahema can take some credit for the high school graduation of Southwest Philadelphia's Martin Thompson.

Thompson, 34, heard Sikahema discuss going back to school to earn his college degree from Brigham Young University last year on "The Angelo Cataldi Show" on WIP 610-AM.

Thompson said he was so moved by Sikahema's story that he picked up a phone that day and started making arrangements to go back to school. He earned his diploma from Bartram High School in Philadelphia this week, with Sikahema in attendence at the ceremony.

Foxx to host awards

Jamie Foxx will host the 11th annual ESPY Awards Sports Celebration, July 16, live on ESPN from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

Many remember Foxx from his role as quarterback Willie Beamen in the Oliver Stone sports film "Any Given Sunday."

Knocked out

CN8 will broadcast a boxing tripleheader featuring fighters from Philadelphia and New England in "Fight Night" tonight at 8 live from the First Union Center. The reason? CN8 recently expanded to the Boston area.

Here's a message to the Boston viewers who may not have caught CN8's Pete Christy, who will be tonight's ringside reporter - I'm sorry.
