Eagles radio play-by-play announcer Merrill Reese finally
received an NFC Championship ring from the 1980 season last
week.
Why now?
"I saw [former Eagles general manager] Jim Murray in the
press dining room before the Eagles-Falcons playoff game in
January," Reese said. "He told me he has felt badly
for the last 23 years that I never received a championship ring
because I was an employee of the radio station [WIP 610-AM at
the time] and not an employee of the Philadelphia Eagles.
"He said that I was as much a part of the team as any
player, coach, or office personnel. He asked me my ring size and
then last week I received a message on my answering machine from
Murray that said, 'The Eagle has landed. Meet me in the
broadcast booth at Veterans Stadium.' "
Murray presented Reese with the official Eagles NFC
Championship ring of 1980 that was engraved "Reese -
Radio."
Stealing the spotlight
Did it bug any other regular HBO boxing fan that Bob Costas
horned his way into the big Lennox Lewis fight last week?
I don't think it was fair that the regular team of Jim
Lampley, Larry Merchant and George Foreman had to share time
with Costas.
What's next: Costas as a love interest on "Sex and the
City?"
Strange voices
There are a couple of new voices on WIP 610-AM.
KYW-3's meteorologist Kathy Orr will be calling in with shore
forecasts on "The Angelo Cataldi Show" Friday mornings
about 8:30 this summer. And veteran Philadelphia radio guy Steve
Trevalise is doing news updates.
Happy campers
Future sportscasters had a blast at the second annual Sports
Broadcasting Camp last week at Bryn Mawr College.
Camp director Jeremy Treatman, who is known for his high
school basketball tournaments, including the sold-out Palestra
and Sovereign Bank Arena games featuring No. 1 overall draft
pick LeBron James, reported that 124 kids between the ages of
10-18 enjoyed a week of learning the tricks of the trade from
Sixers announcer Mark Zumoff, Flyers announcer Jim Jackson,
Phillies announcer Scott Graham and Eagles commentator Vaughn
Hebron.
Some of the others who spent time with the kids were KYW's
Steve Bucci, WTXF's Bill Vargus, Comcast SportsNet's Dick
Jerardi, WIP 610-AM's Paul Jolovitz, and St. Joseph's head
basketball coach Phil Martelli.

Jay Mohr, who bombed out with last summer's "Mohr
Sports" on ESPN is enjoying success this year as the host
and creator of the NBC show "Last Comic Standing."
