As Channel 10 loves to say, we have "Breaking News," but this time it's about Channel 10, as in a stunning move, weekday news anchor Larry Mendte has been pulled from the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts beginning tomorrow, a day before the start of May sweeps.

Weekday 4 p.m. news anchor Tim Lake, who ironically almost left the station a few months ago after being demoted from anchor to reporter, will co-anchor with Renee Chenault-Fattah.

According to a WCAU source, WCAU general manager Dennis Bianchi and news director Chris Blackman decided to take Mendte off the shows because they believed Mendte had offers from other stations.

Many believe that Mendte, who does not have a "no-compete" clause in his estimated mid to high six-figure contract that expires in August, will end up at KYW-3, which has an opening for a news anchor at 6 p.m. Even though Mendte's wife, WTXF anchor Dawn Stensland, was dropped by KYW a couple of years ago, it is a completely new regime there led by general manager Peter Dunn who likes to take talent from competing stations such as Marc Howard and Kathy Orr.  Plus, in another twist, an industry source said that Dunn had lunch with Mendte's former WCAU news director Steve Schwaid this week, leading to speculation that Schwaid could become N.D. there.

According to a WCAU source, the staff is in a state of shock, stating that Mendte is well-liked in the newsroom and a hard worker who helped WCAU in the ratings war against WPVI.  According to the source, if Mendte goes to KYW, there are a lot of people at WCAU who want to go with him.

A KYW spokesperson said she could not comment on the possibility of Mendte switching to 3.

WCAU released a statement "Effective tomorrow Tim Lake will co-anchor the 6 and 11 p.m. news with Renee-Chenault Fattah."

Mendte and Blackman could not be reached for comment.

Mendte, who grew up in Lansdowne, PA and is a graduate of West Chester University, has won the local Emmy for outstanding anchor the last three years.
