Doylestown native Michael Smerconish has finally made it to the pinnacle of radio, as the former full-time attorney turned full-time talk show host will take over morning drive (5:30 a.m. - 9 a.m.) on WPHT 1210-AM September 8.
"Unlike many others in the market, I was born and raised here and can give Philadelphians the unique perspective on issues that affect us," he said.
Smerconish, who began his radio career on WWDB 96.5-FM in 1991 as a political analyst, worked his way up to part-time host on the weekends.  When the station started forcing its hosts to do infomercials, Smerconish left the station since he had a full-time job as lawyer.
Moving over to WPHT, he built an audience in the afternoon, but left the station after a dispute with station management Thanksgiving 2001.  Luckily, both parties came to their senses, and Smerconish returned to the airwaves in May of 2002, with a full time commitment to radio.
Smerconish will replace New York's Don Imus, who wasn't getting good ratings here.  It is not known who will take over Smerconish's 3-6 p.m. timeslot.  Observers say that Jeff Katz (6 p.m. - 8 p.m.) and Dom Giordano (8 p.m. - 10 p.m.) could get more hours.
Smerconish will continue with his radio commentaries on sister station KYW 1060-AM, his position as a CNN contributor, and as a columnist for "The Philadelphia Daily News."

One host is an older guy and the other is a sassy blonde in her 30's, but don't compare the new syndicated show "Living It Up with Ali & Jack" to "Regis and Kelly."
"I'm less fertile," said Ali, aka Alexandra Wentworth, comparing her one daughter to Kelly Ripa's three kids.  Jack is Jack Ford, formerly of "Good Morning America," and the weekend "Today" show.
The hilarious Wentworth is married to George Stephanopolous and the mother of one-year old daughter, Elliott.  The name may not be familiar, but it's likely that viewers have seen her in featured roles in "Jerry Maguire" and "Office Space."  Another claim to fame for Wentworth is she was in the classic "Soup Nazi" episode of "Seinfeld" as "Shmoopie."  Plus, she did many bits on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
Wentworth also spent a couple of seasons on the Fox comedy "In Living Color."  "My name appeared in the credits as "White Girl," Wentworth joked.  She's hoping to get her old friends from the show including Jim Carey, David Allen Grier, and Jamie Foxx to appear on the show, which is filmed live in New York City weekdays at 9 a.m.
So what exactly does "Living It Up with Ali & Jack" mean?  "Who knows?  Somebody in the mailroom came up with the name said Wentworth."
"Living it Up with Ali & Jack" debuts September 15 on CBS3, competing with "Regis and Kelly" on WPVI.
