NBC10 puts a new spin on morning happy talk

With a less rigid format than a regular newscast, the anchors can loosen up a bit.

After getting bombarded with the top news stories of the day at least a dozen times by mid-morning, a nice alternative to the continuous news-weather-traffic-sports routine is "NBC10 News at 10," anchored by Steve Levy, Sharon Reed and Bill Henley. The features-oriented newscast that debuted in February has "something to offer people who don't want hard news," said producer Lydia Reeves.

With a less rigid format than a regular newscast, the anchors can loosen up a bit, especially Reed who delivers the "news with attitude," and plenty of "chit chat" and in-studio guests to keep the hour moving. "The 10 a.m. hour is my favorite show of the day," said Reed, who along with Levy and Henley, start their broadcast days with the 5-7 a.m. news. A recent show included an interview via satellite with "Days of Our Lives" stars, an in-studio interview with author Omar Tyree and tips on selecting a car for a college student.

Even Henley, who does two weather segments each show, gets to break out of his weather pattern and do other pieces. Regular features include "Tech Tip Tuesday," "Workout Wednesday" and a visit from the Philadelphia zoo once a month. In the May ratings period, "NBC10 News at 10" had 1.6 rating (each rating point equals around 26,000 homes), putting it behind "Rosie O'Donnell" on Channel 6, but ahead of "Sally Jessy Raphael" on Channel 3.

So if you are tired of "out of control teens" on Sally, or lame-duck host O'Donnell who is leaving her show at the end of this season, another option is "10 at 10." With the local television graveyard filled with "The Jane Whitney Show," "People Are Talking," "Evening Magazine," "Time Out," "AM Philadelphia" and the recently departed "Philly After Midnight," "NBC10 News at 10" hopes to have a long life.

PANORAMIC MUSIC

Several Bucks County residents will perform in a special classical music edition of "Puerto Rican Panorama" Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on 6ABC. They include Marissa Brown and Alex Fisher of Maple Point Middle School, Olivia Castellanos of Medill Bair High, daughter of host Diego Castellanos, Teresa Harris of Morrisville and Oscar Membrillo, formerly of Yardley ... For another music choice besides MTV and VH1, there's CN8. No, Connie Colla and Arthur Fennell aren't breaking out into song during the news, but artists such as Smashmouth, The Corrs, Sugar Ray and more have appeared on "CN8 Presents: Comcast in Concert" Monday through Thursday and Sunday at 8 p.m. The Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band are on this week ... Once Channel 17 was the home to the innocent "Dancin' On Air." It's not the '80s anymore. Today, students are "Dancing With Danger." This WB17 special hosted by Mike Dardis and Tina Kim looks at the illegal use of club drugs like Ecstasy on Aug. 25 at 8 p.m.

SPORTS TALK

Comcast SportsNet has "McNabbed" Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb from his college days for "Comcast SportsNet Classics." See highlights of Donovan McNabb's football and basketball games for Syracuse tonight and Aug. 25 at 8 ... The tapes continue to pile up on the NBC10 news director Steve Schwaid's desk for the open weekend sports anchor position vacated by Derek Castillo, who returned to his native Texas in July. Currently, "SportsFinal" anchor Howard Eskin is handling sports on Sunday and news anchors Monique Braxton and John Alston are doing the honors on Saturday ... And it's the same old anchors (unfortunately, that means Pete Christy stays), but a brand new set on Comcast SportsNet, which is the new home for "SportsNite" at 6:30 and 10 p.m., "SportsDay" at noon and "SportsRise" from 6-11 a.m.
